A flower with five petals is one of those small projects that looks simple until you start counting rounds. This free crochet pattern gives you a white flower with a yellow center, a stem you can strengthen with wire, and a single leaf, all worked in single crochet with a thin hook. Below you’ll find the materials list, every round for each piece, and the assembly steps. If you enjoy quick makes like this one, there are more in our collection of small crochet projects.

What You Need Before You Start

The pattern uses one yarn in three colors: YarnArt Jeans, listed as 55% acrylic and 45% cotton, 50 g per ball with 160 m of yarn. Here’s the full materials list:

  • YarnArt Jeans in No. 01 (white), No. 88 (yellow) and No. 82 (khaki)
  • A 1.5 mm crochet hook
  • Wire with a diameter of 1.5 to 2 mm
  • Polyester stuffing (holofiber)
  • Plaster for wrapping the wire, a wooden stick for pushing in filler, and a needle for sewing the pieces together

White is for the petals, yellow for the center, and khaki for the stem and leaf. The pattern doesn’t give a finished size. If you’d like to use a different yarn, make one petal first and see whether the scale feels right before you commit to all five.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

Everything here is written in US terms and worked in rounds. These are the abbreviations you’ll see:

  • MR: magic ring
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: increase, meaning two single crochet in the same stitch
  • dec: decrease, meaning two stitches worked together into one
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • BLO: back loops only
  • rnd / rnds: round / rounds

A number in brackets at the end of a round is your stitch count for that round. An asterisk means repeat what comes before it the stated number of times. If another abbreviation ever trips you up, our guide to crochet abbreviations covers the rest.

Crocheting the Flower with Five Petals

Each part is made separately, then sewn together at the end. Start with the stem so you know how long your wire needs to be.

The Stem (khaki)

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6).
  2. Rnds 2 to 16: 6 sc in each round, 15 rounds in all (6).
  3. Rnd 17: Work in back loops only, inc in every stitch (12).
  4. Rnd 18: (2 sc, inc) 4 times (16).
  5. Rnd 19: (3 sc, inc) 4 times (20).

Fasten off and cut the yarn.

The Flower Core (yellow)

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6).
  2. Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12).
  3. Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) 6 times (18).
  4. Rnds 4 and 5: 18 sc in each round (18).
  5. Rnd 6: (1 sc, dec) 6 times (12).
  6. Rnd 7: dec 6 times (6).

Fasten off and cut the yarn. Rounds 6 and 7 are all decreases, so if you’d like a refresher, here’s how to make a single crochet decrease.

The Petals (white)

Make 5, all worked the same way.

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6).
  2. Rnd 2: inc 6 times (12).
  3. Rnd 3: (2 sc, inc) 4 times (16).
  4. Rnds 4 to 6: 16 sc in each round, 3 rounds in all (16).
  5. Rnd 7: (2 sc, dec) 4 times (12).
  6. Rnd 8: (1 sc, dec) 4 times (8).
  7. Rnd 9: Fold the piece in half and work 4 sc through both edges.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. That final round closes the petal flat, so don’t skip the fold.

The Leaf (khaki)

  1. Chain 10.
  2. Work across the sides of the chain, starting in the 2nd stitch from the hook: 3 sc, 5 dc, then 5 dc in the last stitch.
  3. Continue across the other side of the chain: 5 dc, 2 sc, sl st.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Adding the Wire and Putting It All Together

This is the step that turns a few crocheted pieces into a stem you can bend and pose. Follow the order below:

  1. Cut a piece of wire twice the length of your stem.
  2. Fold the wire in half and wrap it with plaster.
  3. Insert the wire into the stem.
  4. Use the wooden stick to push filler into the stem around the wire.
  5. Sew the core, the five petals and the leaf to the stem.

The pattern doesn’t say exactly where each piece sits. The photo that comes with it shows the five petals arranged around the yellow core like a daisy, so I’d lay everything out flat and pin it in place before you start stitching. Those long tails you left on each piece are what you’ll sew with.

Where to Take This Flower Next

Start by making a single petal and checking it against your yarn and hook. Once you’re happy with it, work the other four, then the core, stem and leaf. If you’d like to keep building a bunch, try a crochet poppy flower or a crochet calla lily next, since both give you a different shape to set beside the white and yellow flower.
